I am continuing on a bit of an obsession for maxi's this spring/summer. I had some cotton voile in stash that I thought would make a nice cool maxi skirt so I made up Simplicity 9825, Version D. I've made this pattern up a few times before here and here and here.
I like the yoke on this pattern, its very flattering. The centre front seam can easily be eliminated, which I did for this version. I fully lined it in the same fabric (a black cotton voile from Spotlight) and added a lapped zipper at the centre back. I'm still playing around with piping so I added some black piping at the yoke, I also added a couple of rows of some cream cotton lace at the hem.
I'm wearing it in the pictures with a previously unblogged little lace topy thing I self drafted off a ready to wear top that I loved and was falling to pieces. It needs a bit of refinement but its a good "modesty cover" for when I am not wanting to have too much flesh on display.
A closeup of the piping with complimentary fluff. I should have put a light interfacing on the top layer as the voile is very lightweight and it rippled a bit when putting the piping on. But the advantage of solid black means that those details get lost so I'm hoping no one will notice the slight rippling above and below the piping.
A close up of the lace at the hem and the insides. The lining is just a double fold hem. The outer fabric is serged and folded up 1" and the the lace was topstiched on the outside with cream thread and black thread in the bobbin so its less noticeable on the inside. Its two rows of lace. I originally wanted to use a wide strip of black cotton lace but I couldn't find any and I had this in stash so I thought I'd play around with the black/cream look.
This was made up fast over the course of one day and adds to my everyday run-about wardrobe for spring/summer.
I'm a bit haphazzard with keeping a record of time and cost on my projects but this one is:
4 metres of cotton voile at $6/m = $24
4 metres of cotton lace, in stash but around $3 or $4/m = say $12
Pattern used before so free
Notions: 1 recycled zip pulled out of something else, thread.
1 metre of palest creamy apricot cotton lace from Spotlight, on sale, can't remember but maybe $10?
A synthetic crepe from Spotlight for the tie in a matching colour, just scraps used.
Self drafted pattern.
